Jacksonville, FL — Four people have been shot, including a man and a teen who died, after a fight escalated at Elizabeth R. Powell Park.
JSO Lieutenant Ellis Burns says they received 911 calls around 7PM reporting several people had been shot. Their investigation so far has led them to believe that people were gathered in the basketball courts of the park, off Redpoll Avenue, when a large fight broke out. Several people started shooting at each other, and JSO says four people were hit.
A 24-year-old man was pronounced dead on the scene. A 14-year-old was critically wounded and taken to the hospital, but JSO said early Friday morning that teen died. Two other men self-transported to the hospital with gunshots to the legs, which are not believed to be life-threatening.
JSO says they have no reason to believe this was gang related.
Burns says several people have been taken to police headquarters for questioning. He said there is no reason to believe there is any imminent danger remaining to the community.
Because it is so early in the investigation, Burns says it’s not yet clear what led up to the fight. JSO is continuing to process evidence at the scene- which includes more than a dozen spent shell casings- as well as looking for possible surveillance footage and witnesses.
Police are asking for any information you may have about what happened. You can contact JSO at 904-630-0500 or JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org. You can also submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
