The St. Johns County high school currently under construction and only known as “HHH” will get a new name and mascot on Tuesday.
The choices for the school’s name have been narrowed down to 6:
1. Ancient City High School – Reference to St. Augustine.
2. Nine Mile High School – Reference to the previously named Nine Mile Road, currently International Golf Parkway, that was named after the spring that was called Nine Mile Spring.
3. North River High School – The Tolomato Indians lived “on the river north of St. Augustine”, hence the name of North River.
4. River Valley High School – Reference to John and William Bartram when they described the area in northern Florida as the “St. Johns River Valley”.
5. Tocoi or Tocoi Creek High School – The site of Timucuan village is within the HHH school zone on the St. Johns River. Eventually turned into a Spanish Mission, steamboat port and railway station for commerce and tourism for St. Augustine. Tocoi Creek also resides within HHH school zone.
6. Tolomato High School – Name of the Yamassee Indian village north of St. Augustine at the headwaters of North River or Tolomato River.
HHH will open for the 2021-2022 school year. High School HHH Principal Jay Willets facilitated a community survey and two community meetings to solicit input on potential names for High School HHH.
The first community meeting was held on October 6, 2020, and opened with a discussion of historical information on the community. There were 135 participants in the virtual meeting. The community meeting was followed by a community survey asking for suggestions on school names, school colors and school mascots.
The survey resulted in 572 responses. A second community meeting was held on October 20, 2020, followed by a second community survey with 273 responses.
The meeting will be Tuesday at 9 a.m. You can watch it here: https://www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/https:/go.boarddocs.com/fl/stjohns/Board.nsf/Public
