National Weather Service will look for signs of tornado

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jacksonville will survey parts of St. Johns County to determine if a tornado ripped through the area Monday.

The NWS said it will examine the some of the debris between south of the Mandarin area in Duval County to Switzerland in St. Johns County Tuesday morning.

A team member with the NWS will look for a district track of damage as well as a chaotic debris pattern to determine if there was a tornado.  Twisted tree tops are one of the signs the team member will be looking for.

The NWS said it has targeted the Fruit Cove and Switzerland areas because that is where meteorologists saw the most storm activity on the radar.  They also received phone calls from residents in that area reporting tree damage and strong winds.

One Fruit Cove resident told WOKV he saw hail the sizes of dimes Monday.  Other residents say they storm wasn’t too bad and they didn’t see a lot of damage.
