Naval Station Mayport holds 9/11 Ceremony

N.S. Mayport 9/11 Ceremony The USS New York was partially built from 7.5 tons of steel from the Twin Towers.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — 19 years ago, nearly 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Even more were injured and many still have health problems because of that day.

Chaplain Darron Shaddix led the remembrance ceremony at Naval Station Mayport early this morning. He talked about the importance of never forgetting the attacks, and more importantly, never forgetting how we as a country came together.

After the ceremony, all the ships on base will produce four blasts - recognizing the four separate attacks.

  • 8:46 a.m.: Flight 11 crashes into the North Tower, between floors 93 and 99.
  • 9:03 a.m.: Flight 175 crashes into the South Tower, between floors 77 and 85.
  • 9:37 a.m.: American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon.
  • 10:03 a.m.: United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville.

For the base, this day is especially relevant as USS New York is home to Mayport. The USS New York was built with 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center. The motto of the ship is “Strength forged through sacrifice. Never forget.”

On the hanger doors of the ship is a mural of the twin towers, a permanent reminder for those sailors.
