Nearly 500 Duval homes damaged by Hurricane Matthew

For most of us, Hurricane Matthew is a thing of the past.

For others, it's going to take a while to fully recover.

Nearly 500 homes in Duval County took some sort of damage from the major hurricane when it brushed by the First Coast earlier this month.

That's according to a report recently submitted by the City of Jacksonville to the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

Of the 498 homes listed in the report, 38 were labeled "destroyed" - the highest category possible - with another 269 taking "major" damage.

The report - based in part on initial damage assessments made by local emergency management officials - also had 165 homes suffering "minor" damage and 26 as "affected" by Matthew.

"Major" damage can include structural issues to the home - often caused by heavy winds or flooding - while "minor" often means non-structural damage. "Affected" is the lowest category possible.

Most of those homes didn't list a dollar value for their damage, but the report did show that there was at least $1.29 million in damages to the homes which did report it.

It also shows that storm damage was spread throughout all parts of Jacksonville and the beach towns of Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach, with some homes getting up to six feet of water inside.

While observing cleanup crews working around Glynlea Park earlier today, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry says many of those homeowners can get financial aid to rebuild or cover insurance deductibles through the federal government and that it could've been much worse for the city as a whole.

"The storm tracked out to the east a bit, which spared us what could have been," Curry added. "If you're one person and your home was either destroyed or severely damaged... I mean, that's your life."

Curry also noted that he's pushing cleanup crews to work as fast as possible, though he admits it'll take a while for them to finish.
