Open Arms Community Church Hosts Food Giveaway

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In recognition of the millions of Americans who live in fear of hunger, Friday is National Hunger Day.

Statistics show that in 2020 over 38 million Americans were food insecure. That includes more than 12 million children who were forced to miss meals.

Single parent, Black and Hispanic households with children under the age of six are said to be more apt to fall within this category. Rural communities are also more likely to be food insecure than their urban counterparts, especially those with young children.

Described as a modern day hunger crises, National Hunger Day is used to highlight ways Americans can provide food assistance and direct aid to families who may be food insecure.

Representative Tracie Davis is among those determined to feed as many families as possible. Every month, Davies partners with community members for a free, supplies- while-they-last, food giveaway.

On Saturday, September 18th, beginning at 9 a.m., another food giveaway will be held at the Open Arms Community Church. Partners for tomorrow’s “meals made for the entire family,” include Farm Share and First Coast Panhellenic.

“The partnership with these entities is simply to support the community and bring awareness to the fact that people go hungry,” said Davis.

Davis said that many families are struggling even more so because of Covid 19.

“For families who live with food security, these events provide a vital lifeline in reducing the economic burden on households,” she concluded. “Every month, we provide families much needed nutritional meals for their children. I invite all members of our community to join us.”
