OSHA cites roofing contractor for dangerous conditions at Jacksonville work site

A Florida roofing contractor is cited for exposing employees to dangerous conditions at its Mandarin work site.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administrated issued four citations to Carlson Enterprises. It’s the company’s sixth citation since 2012.

OSHA said the employer failed to provide employees with a fall protection system when working at heights up to 9 feet and did not ensure employees wore eye protection equipment when using powered nail guns. Both violations resulted in a willful citation.

The company was offered a serious citation for not inspecting fall protection equipment for damage or deterioration before using it. They also received another violation for not providing workers with personal protective equipment.

Brian Sturtecky, OSHA’s area director in Jacksonville, says the employer must take immediate action to protect its employees.

“The employer’s disregard for worker safety is unacceptable,” Sturtecky said.

Carlson Enterprises now faces a $212,629 penalty. The company has 15 business days from receipt of the citation and proposed penalties to comply, request a conference with OSHA’s area director, or contest the findings.
