Jacksonville, FL — As the Jacksonville City Council weighs approval of putting a half-cent sales tax increase on the ballot for Duval County voters to decide, a new poll shows overwhelming support for the tax hike.

The poll of Duval County registered voters conducted by the University of North Florida shows 75% of respondents support increasing the sales tax by a half-cent to fund renovations, repairs and new school construction.

“No matter how you slice it, Duval voters are very supportive of the half-cent sales tax increase”, said Mike Binder, faculty director of the Public Opinion Research Lab at UNF.

Support for the sales tax hike was highest among registered Democrats, with 86% giving their approval.

Asked for when they would prefer the vote be held, 34% of respondents preferred a November 5, 2019 special election.  49% support November 3, 2020. And 17% didn’t desire a referendum at all.
