Jacksonville, FL — It's set to break ground this fall.

Jacksonville City Council members are announcing major plans to bring new life to the former Baymeadows Golf Club-- including a new residential and commercial development.

Council Member Danny Becton says the vision for 'Baymeadows Park' will be similar to Tapestry Park on the Southside, with the 6-acre spot becoming a mixed-use urban village.

There are plans to have a 100-room hotel on the site, with a surrounding 35,000 square feet of retail and commercial space for restaurants, specialty stores, and service retail. There will an additional 8,000 square feet of office space.

”The impact of this type of development will serve to inspire the neighborhoods to integrate their communities to expand sidewalks, bike paths and connectivity for everyone to enjoy. For the business community, it will have an impact on everyone by inspiring a revitalization for the whole area," says Becton.

With concerns about the traffic impact for this development and the previously approved DR Horton development, Becton says they’ve been working with the FDOT to come up with a transportation project to help alleviate traffic in the area.

“We came up with a plan that actually adds lanes to Baymeadows Road. We’re going to be able to have 3 lanes of traffic that can flow from Baymeadows Circle East, all the way to the interstate. This is really where the problem in Baymeadows lies-- cause right now you have two lanes trying to go into four lanes. And, unfortunately, those two lanes only hold so much and those four lanes kind of stay not so full,”explains Becton.

He tells WOKV there are also plans to put a new traffic light at Baymeadows Circle West, with the goal of making it a focal point of how people will come and go from their community, instead of the alleyway that is being utilized right now, between the Bank of America and Arby’s.

The projected grand opening for 'Baymeadows Park' is set for Spring 2020. It’s expected to cost around $15 million in total.
