You could soon be driving on some safer roads in Atlantic Beach.
Nearly $2 ½ Million worth of improvements are being discussed for intersections along Mayport road from Atlantic Boulevard to Naval Station Mayport.
Atlantic Beach Mayor Ellen Glasser says the stretch of road has been an area of focus since 12-year-old Hunter Cope died after getting hit by a suspected drunk driver while walking to Mayport Middle School in 2017.
“We have long been concerned about the speed on that road and about the fact that there’s a middle school there that didn’t have a school zone.” Mayor Glasser says.
Plans have not been finalized yet, but Mayor Glasser says they are working with FDOT to find the best solution and construction on the project wouldn't start until the 2021-2022 fiscal year.
Intersection improvements along Mayport Road are just part of a more than $41 million worth of improvements planned on the roads in the beaches area of Duval County from fiscal years 2019-2020 through 2023-2024 according to the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization. Improvements include improving traffic signals, intersections and drainage among other things. The projects include $1,135,281 worth of traffic signal updates at Atlantic Blvd and San Pablo Road, $668,428 worth of intersection improvements at Atlantic Boulevard and A-1-A, $3,475,835 worth of bridge repairs on the eastbound side of the San Pablo River bridge on Atlantic, $770,000 to add lanes and improve Butler Boulevard from I-95 to A-1-A, $14,311,882 to make intersection improvements at Butler Boulevard and San Pablo Road, $1,473,830 worth of improvements to communications systems along Butler Boulevard, and $16,943,637 in drainage improvements on Wonderwood Drive from Wompi Drive to the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge.
