Ships, airplanes leave Jacksonville military bases ahead of Dorian

Photos: Naval Station Mayport welcomes new ship USS Paul Ignatius

On Wednesday, the Navy's newest destroyer, the Arliegh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Paul Ignatius, arrived at Naval Station Mayport.

It is the first warship named for Paul Ignatius, who served as the Secretary of the Navy under President Lyndon B. Johnson from 1967-1969.

About 310 officers and enlisted personnel make up the crew of Paul Ignatius. It will be home ported in Mayport.

The Navy says the destroyer sails up to 30 knots at sea, carrying advanced RADAR and SONAR systems that allow the ship to engage targets in the air, on the sea and underwater.
