Jacksonville FL — On Monday, the St. Augustine City Commission approved a plan to move a Confederate memorial from the Plaza de la Constitución in the heart of the city to the Trout Creek Fish Camp on State Road 13 near the Shands Bridge.

It was a 3-2 vote. City Manager John Regan says the goal is to move the memorial in three weeks.

“I think at the heart and soul of the commission decision was to make sure that that this monument is preserved.” Regan says.

According to a document on the update of the memorial’s move, the fish camp is on privately owned land, but allows for public access for people to come see the memorial. The majority stockholder of the company that owns the camp, Randy Ringhaver, is proposing to build a park setting that includes lighting, sidewalks and seats, so people can visit the memorial for years to come. According to the document, Ringhaver is offering to build a foundation that will hold the memorial at his own expense. Assuming that the foundation is built, the document says moving the memorial to the fish camp would cost a total of $236,000.
