Staff members take oath for new Clay County District Schools Police Department

The latest effort to keep Clay County students safe in school is really starting to take shape.

The inaugural class of officers with the Clay County District Schools Police Department were sworn in Thursday night at the School Board’s August meeting.

The first wave is made up of 47 staff members. That includes the chief, two lieutenants, four sergeants, 36 school resource officers, three relief school resource officers and one detective.

The members of the staff stood in front of the meeting, and Chief Kenneth Wagner introduced each one individually. Family members got the chance to pin badges on their loved ones during the ceremony.

The School Board approved the formation of the new police department in February, and now the new men and women in uniform are ready to start protecting students in Clay County.

School starts Aug. 13.
