PGA Tour: THE PLAYERS is cancelled

Jacksonville, FL — Update: The PGA Tour says THE PLAYERS has been cancelled. The PGA Tour released the following statement.

“It is with regret that we are announcing the cancellation of THE PLAYERS Championship.

We have also decided to cancel all PGA TOUR events – across all of our Tours – in the coming weeks, through the Valero Texas Open.

We have pledged from the start to be responsible, thoughtful and transparent with our decision process. We did everything possible to create a safe environment for our players in order to continue the event throughout the weekend, and we were endeavoring to give our fans a much-needed respite from the current climate. But at this point – and as the situation continues to rapidly change – the right thing to do for our players and our fans is to pause.

We will be prepared to answer additional questions on Friday at 8 a.m.”

Original Story:

THE PLAYERS will be closed to fans beginning Friday and through the weekend at TPC Sawgrass.  The PGA Tour announced the decision hours after the first round began today. The course will be open to fans for the remainder of today.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan says it was a difficult situation with consequences that impacts fans, players and the community.

“At this point in time, PGA TOUR events – across all Tours – will currently proceed as scheduled but will do so without fans. This policy starts at THE PLAYERS Championship tomorrow (Friday) and continues through the Valero Texas Open. It’s important to note, that could change, but for the time being, this decision allows the PGA TOUR, our fans and constituents to plan, prepare and respond as events develop”, said Monahan.

CORONAVIRUS:  Closings, cancellations, resources

THE PLAYERS will continue with essential personnel only, and they will communicate with vendors, player support groups, essential volunteers and the news media.

“This is a difficult situation, one with consequences that impact our players, fans and the communities in which we play. As I said earlier this week, we’ve had a team in place that has been carefully monitoring and assessing the situation and its implications for several weeks. We’ve weighed all the options, and I appreciate the input and collaboration across the TOUR, our industry, our partners and our members that got us to this point. We’ll continue with that collaboration, and I want to thank our fans for supporting the PGA TOUR”, said Monahan.

It follows an earlier announcement that fans who purchased tickets would be able to receive a refund. And autograph sections of the course were closed out of an abundance of caution. THE PLAYERS says tickets bought through Ticketmaster will be refunded automatically from Ticketmaster and refunds should be received within 7-10 days. You can check the status by calling 800-653-8000. If you bought your tickets though the phone via a PGA Tour sales agent or through the PGA Tour app a refund will be issued automatically. THE PLAYERS says if you bought your tickets that way, then a Ticketmaster agent will not be able to give you an update on the status of your refund. If you bought you ticket through a third party vendor, then you’ll need to reach out to the agency where you bought the tickets. Parking passes will receive a refund from ParkMobile. Refund requests can be made by calling 866-330-7275.
