Two Jacksonville teenagers are dead and an elderly Fernandina Beach man is at UF Health with serious injuries after a traffic accident just north of the Duval-Nassau county line.
The Florida Highway Patrol says it happened around 7 p.m. last night on US 17, two miles south of Harts Road.
Troopers have identified the dead teens as 16-year-old Kay Stanley Deraway IV and 15-year-old Travis Lighthall. Both died at the scene.
According to the accident report, Deraway IV was driving a blue 2002 Nissan Sentra southbound on US 17 when it veered into the right shoulder and then overcorrected into the northbound lanes. That's when the passenger side of the Sentra was struck by the front of a 2012 Kia Soul driven by a 76-year-old man.
Lighthall was a passenger in the Sentra, per the report. It also noted that all three involved were wearing seat belts and that charges are pending at this time because more investigative work needs to be done, specifically if alcohol or drugs were factors.
FHP Master Sergeant Dylan Bryan says weather appears to be a factor in the crash, especially since there are parts of US 17 in that area which aren't very well lit.
"It can be dangerous at times, especially when you start incorporating inclement weather, some possible driver distractions or anything of that nature," Bryan said.
The investigation kept US 17 in that area closed for nearly three hours.
