The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after two women were hit and killed by a train late Wednesday afternoon. Deputies say the two were trying to cross the train tracks at U.S. 1 and Lewis Speedway in St. Augustine when one of them fell on the rocks inside the tracks. That’s when deputies say the other woman tried to help her get up, but the two couldn’t make it out the way in time.
St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Chuck Mulligan says the incident is tragic.
“We need to implore people not to get on to the railroad tracks. We’ve seen tragedies throughout the years, it is private property, people are not supposed to be walking on or across, these, these particular areas.” Mulligan says.
The women have been identified as 46-year-old Christine Holmes Griggs and 55-year-old Jacqueline Marie McCleary, both from St. Augustine.
