Michael Namey, 18, was sitting in class at the University of Central Florida when he suffered a heart attack Monday and died a day later in the hospital.
Fellow students rushed to save Namey's life but had a hard time finding an automated external defibrillator (AED). Now some have started a petition calling on UCF to add more lifesaving devices to campus.
Students on the scene told our news partner, WFTV in Orlando that the class was on the first floor and the nearest AED was on the second floor.
Manny Orozco, a trained EMT, ran into the class with another student to provide CPR.
"Michael will stay with me for the rest of my life," said Orozco. "We tried everything we could but it did take a while before that AED machine was brought to us."
Orozco, however, said he's not sure whether it would have made a difference had it been brought in sooner.
Emergency personnel did arrive with one of the life-saving devices less than 3 minutes after Namey collapsed.
"Every second counts," Orozco said.
Namey was alive when he made it to the hospital but died Tuesday.
The University has a total of 22 devices. The police department has 11 in its patrol cars and one in its communication center. The rest are in buildings around campus.
In February a defibrillator was used to save the life of an older student.
