Watch: Two JEA reactors imploded in seconds on Jacksonville’s northside

Jacksonville FL — Friday Morning two catalytic reactors came down in just a few seconds at the St. Johns River Power Park on Jacksonville's northside.

This implosion is part of the overall decommissioning of the plant which JEA says is now scheduled to be complete by the end of June next year, but that timeline is subject to change. JEA says once the plant is completely decommissioned it will reduce their carbon footprint by about 30%. At this time, the decommissioning process is about 40% complete with the next major event in the process being another implosion that should take place sometime this summer. JEA hasn't announced a specific date for that event yet.

JEA Spokesperson Gina Kyle says once the plant is completely decommissioned the land will go through a remediation process, which is a process that reverses or stops any environmental damage.

"After the remediation what you can expect is that the land will be redeveloped either for commercial or industrial use." Kyle says.
She adds the land could possibly be used by JEA as well. She says there is no specific timeline for completion of the remediation process.

The clean up from the implosion is expected to take months.
