An e-commerce company is coming to Jacksonville, promising to bring 250 jobs to the area in exchange for a tax rebate from the city.
Wayfair Inc. has chosen Jacksonville for a 1-million-square-foot warehouse and distribution center, according to the city.
“We are delighted to welcome Wayfair to Jacksonville,” says Mayor Lenny Curry. “Their entry adds hundreds of jobs to our community, and contributes economic value that bolsters our statewide growth in job creation and demand.”
The facility will be on the Westside at the Cecil Commerce Center. The city says those 250 workers are expected to be hired by the end of 2021.
“We are excited to join the Duval County community as we continue to scale our logistics operations in the state of Florida to support the incredible growth of our business,” says James Savarese, chief operating officer of Wayfair.
He says the company will benefit from a "strong talent pool" in the area.
Wayfair has more than 10 million products from more than 10,000 different suppliers, according to the city. They are based in Boston and have about 11,000 employees. The Jacksonville location will serve the company's customers throughout the Southeast.
Wayfair generated $6.22 billion in net revenue over a 12-month period ending Sept. 30.
The Jacksonville City Council approved the project earlier this year, calling the development "Project Empire."
As part of that approval, the city will give Wayfair a 50 percent tax break over a 10-year period. That revenue grant is worth $3.3 million.
