The woman who was beaten by an officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office pled guilty Thursday to resisting an officer without violence.
Mayra Martinez, 31, was arrested back in April at Scores Bar on University with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit.
The report said Martinez resisted arrest and kicked and bit 26-year-old Officer Akinyemi Borisade, who struck her on her lower back to get her to comply.
Her attorney, Reid Hart, said by pleading guilty the charge was lowered from a felony to a misdemeanor.
Martinez was adjudicated guilty and sentenced to 12 months of probation and ordered to complete 50 hours of community service. She’s also required to complete an alcohol program.
The two other charges Martinez faced– trespassing and battery—were dropped.
During her booking process, surveillance video captured Borisade pushing Martinez back to a wall, at which point she tried to kick him, but missed, and then kicked again. Borisade was then seen on the video hitting Martinez several times.
Hart told us Martinez still intends on suing the sheriff’s office for that incident.
Borisade– who was fired—pleaded no contest to a charge of misdemeanor battery. The court withheld adjudication and Borisade was sentenced to 1 day time served in jail.
Hart called it a “slap on the wrist” and “unfortunately not surprising.”
