JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says a good samaritan lost her life trying to help an injured dog on University Boulevard South, just south of Atlantic, at 10:21 pm Monday night.

JSO says the woman parked in the center turn lane and was attempting to help the dog that was lying in the southbound lanes.

She was hit by a small SUV and was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators say that the driver of the SUV remained on scene to cooperate with police and there was no sign of impairment.

According to JSO records, this marks the 137th traffic fatality in Duval County so far this year, and now, the ninth death from a crash on University Blvd.
