JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 22-year-old woman is dead after she was shot by a Jacksonville sheriff’s officer Tuesday night. It happened at a home in Arlington in the 1100 block of Westdale Drive.
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was called to the home at about 10:45 p.m. in response to a fight with injuries between a boyfriend and girlfriend, Sheriff T.K. Waters said during a news conference Wednesday morning.
The first officer arrived at the scene and was approached by a man outside of the house who said he was in a fight with his girlfriend. He told the officer she was inside and armed with a knife, JSO said.
The woman then exited the home with several items in her hands and the officer ordered her to drop everything. She dropped some of the items and continued holding a large kitchen knife, JSO said.
The officer shot the woman one time after JSO said she moved towards the officer with the knife not complying with multiple orders to drop it. The woman fell to the ground and JSO said she still had the knife while continuing to advance towards the officer. The officer shot her a second time, JSO said.
The woman put the knife down and was put into custody. She was treated by Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department and was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The boyfriend was treated for minor injuries. No officers were injured during the incident. JSO did not release the names of the officer or the woman pending notification of her next of kin.
JSO said the woman was arrested in April for felony battery on her boyfriend. JSO said this is the departments 13th officer-involved shooting this year.
