Yulee Elementary student gets homework about unfaithful relationships

Yulee Elementary homework This assignment was given to several fifth grade students at Yulee Elementary school.

It’s an assignment that has a parent in Nassau County concerned- her 11-year-old was given reading homework that talked about being in an unfaithful relationship.

The Nassau County School District confirms that a small number of fifth graders at Yulee Elementary were given a printed reading assignment which you can see pictured to the left. The teacher assigned certain students more work to improve their reading/writing skills, and most of the students were given work to do at home online. A few students who did not have internet available at home were given the printed assignment. The District could not immediately say why the students without internet received a different assignment than those who could work online.

The assignment is actually geared for adults learning English as a second language. The district confirms that, while the content is not explicit, it is not appropriate for the age group.

I’m told the principal at Yulee Elementary School spoke with the teacher who issued the assignment to make sure it would not happen again and that work found on third-party sites in the future is more carefully screened. The parent who spoke with WOKV said she was contacted by the teacher, however, and she maintained the work was appropriate for the students.

After WOKV brought this to the District we were told the principal would again be reaching out to the teacher to make sure she understood the assignment was at fault.

The parent who spoke with WOKV says she was concerned about the content, but has not seen anything that she questioned before now. The District says the teacher involved has a good reputation, and appears to have made a one-time lapse in judgment.
