HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Rock 'n' Roll icon Little Richard has been laid to rest.

The "Good Golly Miss Molly" singer was buried during an outdoor service at Oakwood University, his alma mater, The Associated Press reported.

University president Leslie Pollard remembered the singer as being a generous person.

"I remember those of us riding around with him in Los Angeles, and he'd have money in the trunk of his car. Why he had money in the trunk of the car, only he knew, but he would take money out and gave it to the homeless people," Pollard said during the service, the AP reported.

Richard, born Richard Penniman, died May 9 after being diagnosed with bone cancer. He was 87.
