Amid accusations of plagiarism and fraud, Charlie Van Zant has been voted out as the Clay County Superintendent of Schools.

Van Zant was defeated by Addison Gray Davis, losing by more than 4,000 votes.

A former principal has accused Van Zant of cheating on his master’s degree as well as defrauding records to boost graduation rates. In the last month, two letters have been sent to the school board saying students were in special education classes who should not be.

Van Zant has fervently denied the claims, saying his innocence will be proven. The Florida Department of Education referred its investigation to the school board earlier this week.

According to his campaign website, Davis served as the chief of schools in Duval from 2013-15 and has lived in the Oakleaf community for 12 years. He is a graduate of Guilford College and Jacksonville University.
