The U.S. Coast Guard discovered several safety deficiencies after inspecting a boat operated by Victory Casino Cruises in Jacksonville, which has canceled trips until Friday.
The Coast Guard tells WOKV News an anonymous tip led to the inspection. Capt. Timothy Levensalor, the marine superintendent for Victory Casino Cruises, says the problems are mechanical and being fixed.
“I’m concerned that whoever did this anonymous tip didn’t come to me,” Levensalor says.
He says Victory Cruises originally scheduled its annual inspection with the Coast Guard for June 6 and 7, but it was moved up to this week after the safety problems surfaced.
The company says its normal sailing schedule will resume on Friday, May 29th for the PM cruise. About 800 to 1,000 people had cruises booked this week that were canceled; those customers are promised a refund as well as a certificate for a free cruise for each person booked, $10 for the slot machines or gaming tables, and a free meal.
WOKV News is expecting a call from the Coast Guard inspector on Tuesday.
