SMITHFIELD, Utah — A 5-year-old Utah boy accidentally shot and killed himself while playing with a gun in a Smithfield home, authorities said.
According to KSL and KUTV, the incident occurred Sunday morning, just hours after the family had returned from a camping trip. Smithfield police said the boy wandered downstairs overnight as the rest of the family slept and started to play with the camping equipment, the news outlets reported. The child then discovered a loaded handgun and accidentally fired it, striking himself in the head, police said.
Police have not said whether anyone will face charges in connection with the incident. No further information, including the child’s name, was immediately available.
