Amazon to open second fulfillment center in Jacksonville

You might want to send your resume to Amazon if you're looking for a job in the Bold City.

The e-commerce giant announced plans today to open a second fulfillment center in Jacksonville to go along with the one it announced last July.

"We're excited to further expand our presence in the state with this new fulfillment center in Jacksonville," said Akash Chauhan, Amazon's vice president of North American operations. "Florida has been an ideal location to help enable super fast shipping speeds to customers and a source of exceptional talent for Amazon."

The new facility - which will be located at the Cecil Commerce Center - will add more than 1,000 full-time jobs with benefits starting on day one once it's built, according to company officials.

The first fulfillment center is currently under construction on the Northwest side near Jacksonville International Airport. It's due to open sometime in fall, creating 1,500 full-time jobs once it does.

Aaron Bowman - the senior vice president of JAXUSA Partnership - says the new 1,000,000 square-foot facility will pick, pack and ship large items like household decor, sports equipment and garden tools while the one near JIA will focus on smaller items, making that one more of an automated setup.

"Landing a second facility in such a short amount of time further solidifies the JAX region as a place of unlimited opportunity fueled by possibilities," Bowman added.

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry is similarly bullish.

"This is an exciting development for Jacksonville and the Cecil Commerce Center," Curry noted. "The center is a tremendous asset for our city, offering companies like Amazon ample space, resources and accessibility."

Bowman also noted that Amazon is the company whose identity was hidden under Project Velo, meaning it could be receiving over $8 million in local and state tax incentives with the creation of this second fulfillment center.

Company officials say Amazon has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in capital projects in the Sunshine State and created over 4,000 full-time jobs along the way, with many coming over the last three years thanks to the creation of four fulfillment centers, two sorting centers and Prime Now locations in Orlando, Tampa and Miami.
