The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says an Amber Alert has been cancelled for a 6-year-old girl whose mother took her Friday afternoon after a supervised visit.
JSO says Onnika Fisher was found safely with her mother during a traffic stop in Perry, Georgia, just outside of Macon. Fisher's mother, Charity Chatman, was arrested for an outstanding warrant for interference with custody. Chatman had apparently told Fisher after the visit that she had presents forher in her car.
Chatman has a history of mental illness, and police say there is a concern about the child’s welfare. JSO wasn’t immediately able to say why Chatman needs to have supervised visits. Assistant Chief Chris Butler says Chatman has shown what he calls “delusional” behavior, through email references to being watched. While police say there is no history of violence between Chatman and the child, Butler says he doesn’t want to minimize the seriousness of the situation. Chatman lost custody of Onnika about 6 weeks ago.
Onnika is a black or mixed-race girl, 3’10”, 53 lbs last seen wearing a pink jacket with white polka dot inner lining, blue jeans and a pony tail. Chatman is a black female, 5’8”, 200 lbs, last seen wearing a green jacket, blue jeans and a red baseball cap. They were last seen traveling in a 2000 dark green Buick Century with an Ohio plate, numbered FPA4958. JSO says Chatman has been known to frequent hotels, specifically Red Roof Inns. They have checked every Red Roof Inn within JSO jurisdiction and we’re told that company is cooperating.
The Florida Department of Children and Families tells our partner Action News Onnika was in the care of a foster family and they had no indication Chatman would do anything like take the child.
JSO says the child’s father is cooperating with their investigation, although he lives in the southern part of the state. They had no indication of whether Chatman may be taking the child in that direction.
