Want to apply for or renew your concealed carry permit in Clay County?

You can do that starting today at the county's tax collector's office.

Clay becomes the 26th county in the state where you can apply for a concealed weapons license at the tax collector's office via a program from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

"By partnering with local tax collectors throughout the state, Floridians gain access to greater convenience when applying for or renewing their concealed weapon license," said Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam. "I thank Clay County Tax Collector Jimmy Weeks for his active role in the effort to provide Floridians an efficient experience when seeking a concealed weapon license."

The service - which allows tax collectors to receive applications, take fingerprints and photographs - is also available at the tax offices in Nassau and St. Johns as well as Putnam.

"I am committed to making your transactions with state agencies as simple and convenient as possible," Weeks added. "By offering to accept concealed weapon license applications at our Bear Run location, local residents will no longer have to drive to other counties for this service."

The service is only available at the Bear Run location in Clay. Appointments are strongly recommended. Those who want to sign up can call 904-284-6320.

There are now 34 locations in Florida to apply for or renew a state concealed weapon license, according to Putnam's office.

Since the partnership with tax collectors began in 2014, more than 60,000 concealed weapon license applications have been accepted by tax collector offices in Florida.

There are currently more than 1.5 million concealed weapon licenses in the Sunshine State.
