JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville residents will get a chance to sit down with local law enforcement and legal experts next week and ask questions about public safety, their rights and situations they may face with police.
The Police & The People Forum and Dinner is happening Thursday, September 3, at the Farah & Farah Performance Studio in Jacksonville.
Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters and attorney Stephen G. Daniels will be part of the discussion, along with other community panelists.
Shawn Knight, afternoon host on WOKV sister station HOT 106.5, says people are encouraged to come with questions and concerns about what they are seeing in their communities.
“This is a perfect opportunity for you to come out and voice your opinion, voice your concerns and get the answers that you want and get the answers that you need,” Knight said.
Getting police and the community in the same room
The idea is pretty simple: get people in the same room, talk about some of the issues happening in Jacksonville and give residents a chance to hear directly from law enforcement.
Knight said the conversation is not about pointing fingers or placing blame.
“We are all coming together to talk and to find solutions,” he said.
Some of the topics will include DUI offenses, driving with a suspended license and family disputes that get out of control. The conversation will also cover the legal consequences that can come with those situations.
Parents are encouraged to bring their teenagers.
Knight said he hopes the event can help people better understand what to do in situations involving police while also giving law enforcement a chance to hear directly from the community.
“We want to make sure that every voice is heard,” Knight said. “We all want the same thing in regards to making sure our communities are safe.”
The event is free
The Police & The People Forum and Dinner is free, but space is limited.
Dinner will start around 5:15 p.m., followed by the forum at 6 p.m. Knight and Wanda P will moderate the conversation.
