Jacksonville, FL — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says a man is dead after an officer-involved shooting near the FSCJ downtown campus in Lavilla. JSO says the officer involved is not injured.
Police say they were called out to W. State Street for an armed aggravated assault late Wednesday night and when the first officer arrived at the scene witnesses pointed to a disturbance between the suspect, who witnesses tell WOKV was a man, and a veteran in a wheelchair. JSO says the man who was shot was holding a knife to the veterans throat and the officer yelled at the suspect to drop the knife. Police say at that point the suspect refused and the officer shot and killed the suspect. JSO is continuing to investigate the incident, and one witness told WOKV they saw the man who was shot act aggressive before the shooting. The veteran tells WOKV that he is relatively ok, but he does have a minor injury near his nose. He says he’s not sure why the man put a knife up to his throat. Police confirm the two men involved are homeless.
JSO says the officer was wearing a body cam during the incident and police say more information should be released on this incident Friday at 2PM.
