Jacksonville FL — Jacksonville police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting on Youngerman Circle Tuesday afternoon. JSO says the officer has minor injuries and the suspect is dead.
During an update, Chief T.K. Waters announced that the incident started with four calls for service at the Quality Inn involving the same people, including one for domestic disturbance. The calls were between 6:24 AM and 12:37 PM Tuesday. Chief Waters says when officers arrived at 12:53 PM they were told by a female in a hotel room that a man pushed the door to the room open and went back inside after leaving earlier in the day. Chief Waters says when officers tried talking with the man, he refused to respond to what the officers were saying and walked to the back of the hotel room. The officers then tried to take the man into custody for refusing to listen to their orders and Chief Waters says a fight between the officers and suspect broke out.
“During the fight, which lasted well over a minute, the suspect can be heard saying ‘I’m a kill you, I’m gonna kill you’. Shortly after, the officer could be heard yelling ‘he’s going for my taser, he’s got my taser’.” Chief Waters says.
Chief Waters says the taser was cycling during the fight and that’s when Officer J.H. Wing shot at the suspect. After those initial shots, the suspect continued to come towards the officers and he lunged at them. Chief Waters says Officer Wing shot at the suspect again. We’re told the officers then handcuffed the suspect and performed CPR on him, but he later died. The officer received minor injuries, a bruise on his face, and a contact wound from the taser that was being used on him.
Chief Waters says this is Officer Wing’s first officer-involved shooting in the two years he’s been a police officer with JSO. He’s been placed on administrative leave.
The state attorney’s office is conducting its own independent investigation.
Officer Involved Shooting Chief T.K. Waters briefed the community today in reference to an officer involved shooting that occurred in the 6100 block of Youngerman Circle at around 1:00 pm.
