Life plus 90 years for Michael Dunn

Life without parole.

It’s the sentence Michael Dunn will serve for the death of 17-year-old Jordan Davis. Dunn was also sentenced today to three consecutive sentences of 30 years in prison for the attempted murder charges against the three teens who were with Davis. Dunn has also been sentenced to 15 years for shooting in to the car, but that sentence will run concurrent.

“It’s a victory in a sense, but it’s not a total victory. A total victory is when we meet Jordan in heaven,” Jordan’s father Ron Davis said following the sentencing.

The shooting happened November 2012 at a Gate gas station on Southside and Baymeadows. Dunn says he feared for his life after asking the teens to turn their music down because Davis became angry. Dunn further says he thought Davis had a gun. No weapon was ever found, however, and the jury did not agree with Dunn’s self-defense arguments.

He was convicted of the second degree attempted murder charges in February. At that time, the jury hung on the first degree murder charge for Davis’ death. Dunn was tried again and convicted earlier this month.

“Our lives have been devastated these past two years,” he says.

While Dunn was on the stand ahead of the sentence coming out, he gave a brief statement.

“I’m mortified I took a life,” he said.

But it was  too little too late for Davis, who was also upset Dunn’s family never approached him.\

“To the very last minute, to the very last second, not even come over and hug us, shake our hands, and say that we’ll get through this together,” he says.

Dunn’s attorney’s motion for a new trial was denied.  He has 30 days to appeal the sentencing.
