Jacksonville, FL — Josh Phillips told Maddie Clifton’s family in court that he is sorry — after almost 20 years behind bars

Phillips fought back tears explaining his regret and his hope the Clifton family can find peace. One of the Clifton family members could be heard by our partner Action News Jax saying, "I needed to hear that," after Phillips apologized.

Phillips was only 14 when he killed Maddie Clifton, 8, and hid her body under a bed.

It was a base that rocked the Jacksonville community. Now, 19 years later, Phillips apologized. The courtroom was silent as Phillips explained his pain and regret.

“I did something horrible,” Phillips said. “I am so sorry for what happened.

in 1998, Phillips beat and stabbed Clifton, then hid her in his waterbed. Phillips’ mother found the body six days later.

A recent Supreme Court hearing says mandatory life sentences for juveniles — without parole — are unconstitutional.

Phillips’ case is getting another look, and a judge could decide that he is getting out of prison sooner.

Phillips told the Clifton family that he has waited for an opportunity to say “sorry” face-to-face.

Both Phillips’ family and Clifton’s family were in tears.

“May God bless you and heal you as much as possible,” Phillips said.

Dr. James Garbarino, a professor of Psychology at Loyola University, testified extensively earlier Wednesday and said that Phillips was rehabilitated and has a desire to become a monk.
