Jacksonville, FL — WOKV is learning more about the investigation that led to the arrest of former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Telvin Smith on Wednesday. Smith, who announced his retirement from the NFL, is charged with unlawful sexual activity with certain minors.
According to an affidavit for arrest warrant Smith, who was 28 at the time, met a minor at her place of employment in late August 2019. The two took several photographs together and, during the meeting, the minor told Smith that she had just celebrated her birthday and that it was made clear to Smith that she was under 18.
After several exchanges on social media and on the phone, the minor agreed to meet Smith in person. The affidavit states that the two met at the intersection of Beach and Hodges on the southside and they drove to Smith’s home where they had sex.
Smith then drove her back to her vehicle and offered her $200, urging her not to tell anyone about what happened as he could go to jail. She ultimately agreed to take $100, according to the affidavit.
As the minor was driving home, she called a friend and described what happened. She then told a family member and asked about obtaining birth control. The minor and a family member later purchased birth control from a Walgreens, using the $100 bill provided by Smith.
The minor told police that Smith contacted her in September about meeting up, at which point the pair had sex in his vehicle at a Clay County parking lot, according to the affidavit.
What is unclear in the affidavit is how police became involved, and when. Smith’s home in Queen’s Harbor was searched by JSO in late November, and his Cadillac Escalade was towed away as evidence.
In late December a swab that was collected from Smith’s vehicle was processed for DNA and found to contain a female DNA profile. The affidavit was redacted and does not say whether the DNA matched that of the minor.
Smith was released from jail on bond late Wednesday. WOKV is working to speak with his attorney and will update with any statement provided.
