Over 40 percent of Duval students will be taught virtually

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — School starts in less than two weeks for Duval County students, and Duval County School Superintendent Dr. Diana Greene says a little more than 40 percent of students have registered for virtual learning.

Greene told Jacksonville’s Morning News that ten percent of students signed up for Duval Virtual Instruction Academy and one-third of students signed up for Duval HomeRoom. She says the amount of students who registered for virtual learning was higher than they expected.

“We have close to 37000 students and then matching up teachers with those students. However, if parents still fill out a registration, they will get the message that their registration is late. But we are still taking those registrations. And where we have openings, we are filling those openings,” Greene said.

On Tuesday, the School Board approved a $30 million contract to lease up to 50,000 laptops, so that every student has a laptop available. Dr. Greene said students who need laptops or hotspots for Duval HomeRoom, and have indicated that they needed it, will be prioritized to get those items first. However, not all students will get the equipment until October.

Dr. Greene also addressed bus registration and school immunizations forms. Both need to be submitted to DCPS before school starts.
