A fit of road rage turns ugly in Orange Park.
An active duty member of the Marine Corps was slashed in his back during a fight in the parking lot of a CVS on Park Avenue Sunday night. Orange Park Police say the victim- now identified as Lieutenant Jared Cox- had apparently unintentionally cut the suspect off in traffic on U.S. 17, and the suspect became enraged and followed the victim into the parking lot.
The suspect- Tyler Lee Ennis of Middleburg- confronted the victim, and a verbal exchange took place. Police say the suspect head-butted the victim in the face, and both men went to the ground. Ennis then allegedly produced a knife and cut the victim, leaving a two foot-long gash on his back.
Ennis fled the scene, but a vehicle description helped lead police to him. Police say they found a folding knife that had blood on it in his possession and that he admits to what happened. Ennis is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
We're told the Cox underwent surgery Sunday night and is expected to fully recover from his injuries. Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, in South Carolina, confirms to WOKV that Cox was doing some refresher training at NAS Jax and is an active member of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122. A spokesman says Cox seems to be in good condition.
