Ferguson Police Chief Frank McCall told KMOV he estimated anywhere from 10 to 25 people were involved in the chaotic scene, which took place in the self-checkout area of the Walmart.

McCall told KSDK that officers were called to the store for a report of a disturbance shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday, but by the time the officers arrived, all the people involved had left the store.

“We’ve never had an incident that involved 20 individuals in a brawl like that in a department store,” McCall told KSDK. “I don’t really see the purpose of it.”

Videos of the fight, which were posted to social media, show people kicking each other, throwing objects, and even setting off a fire extinguisher.

“I’ve seen some videos on social media, and it’s disgraceful,” McCall told KMOV. “I’m going to call it like it is.”

McCall said that while officers are unsure what led to the violence, they do believe that those involved knew each other, KSDK reported.

“I also think there was a security officer at the store last night, but I’m not sure,” McCall told KSDK. “Based on what we’re looking at, he would’ve been outnumbered.”

McCall told KMOV that police have been able to identify some of the individuals they believe were involved. No charges have been filed, but McCall said that he believes Walmart plans to prosecute the suspects for property damage.

A spokesperson for Walmart told KSDK, “our customers’ safety is our top priority.”
